Choosing Bright: Why I Traded "Slimming" Neutrals for Unapologetic Self-Expression
The Illusion of Fitting the Mold
Early in my career, I thought showing up professionally meant fitting an understated corporate mold. For a long time, every pair of yoga pants I owned was black. In full transparency, I told myself they looked better because they were "slimming" and made me look more fit.
But beneath that logic was a quieter instinct: play it safe, don't draw too much attention, and blend in.
15 years ago, I made a conscious shift: I decided to start choosing bright.
I bought neon orange pants and a bright pink top simply because they made me feel good. I traded the impulse to hide behind "slimming" neutrals for the joy of owning my bigger, brighter self.
The Ripple Effect of Authenticity
That 15-year commitment to authentic self-expression turned into pure magic on a recent morning walk. I showed up wearing my favorite neon combo, and my friend Anne took one look and said, "Hey, let’s match!"
Before we knew it, the rest of the ladies wanted in on the bright pants too. Five of us ended up walking along the beach together in a vibrant sea of color, coffee cups in hand, toes in the sand.
What was incredible was the community's reaction as we walked:
Strangers beamed and smiled as we passed by.
Passersby stopped us to tell us how much they loved our colors.
The collective energy felt deeply joyful and expansive.
It was a powerful reminder of why I made that shift a decade and a half ago: Authentic presence is magnetic. When you stop trying to minimize yourself and step into your full brightness, you create a ripple effect that gives everyone around you permission to do the same.
Honoring Both the Bright and Dark Days
Now, don't get me wrong, there are still days where black or dark neutrals are the exact right fit.
Some days require going inward, keeping things quiet, and honoring a slower pace to support where we are emotionally. Both belong. Being authentic isn't about forcing yourself to be loud every day; it's about honoring where you are without shrinking just to fit someone else's mold.
When you have light to share, don't hold back. Wear the bright colors, take up space, and let your joy spill over into the world.
